Greetings, Sean!
Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you are having issues reinstalling OS X on your computer and I am more than happy to help! Question: Q: MacBook Pro Mid-2009 Install El Capitan I have a MacBook Pro Mid-2009, have been having performance issues and decided to do a factory reset. Having started up in recovery mode (Command + R), I ran disk utility, erased the disk and was then prompted with reinstall macOS. El Capitan can be downloaded from this link. Yosemite is available here. On a computer running OS X Yosemite it is possible to see versions of Mac OS X in the Mac App Store. Mac Models: Late 2009 iMac, 2009 MacBook, 2010 MacBook Pro, 2010 MacBook Air, 2010 Mac Mini, 2010 Mac Pro; Once you are certain that your Mac has met the requirements above, make sure you have backed up your Mac. This backup will come in handy in case something comes up in the process of upgrading to High Sierra. Upgrading from El Capitan to Sierra.

I was trying to do a clean install of the OS since I had to give the laptop to my mother, so I rebooted the MacBook and held Cmd+R. Apparently everything was fine, I cleaned the disk and was reinstalling the OS but it was taking so much time (27hrs estimated and no sign that the process was progressing) that I quit the installation and tried the initialize disk once again, but failed at that. So I rebooted the whole system and now it seems that Cmd+R doesn't work anymore. All I can do is holding Option to select the drive, which doesn't lead me to anything. The system tries to boot but the screen with the Apple and the loading bar doesn't go away. I've thought to make a bootable USB but I don't really understand how through Windows.
Any ideas?
It really doesn't need to be El Capitan, I just want the Macbook to work.
